My goal is to create paintings that capture subjects which other people overlook. I love working with light, the use of light and dark and playing with shadows. I enjoy the study of "Character" in my portraits. My paintings are realistic with an underlying subtle abstract use of the brush. Feeling driven to paint, I take pride in being prolific and feel honored that I can earn a living by doing something I so thoroughly enjoy.

Andy Smith is a self-taught artist. What he lacks in formal training he has made up in self studying the works of the masters, reading voraciously and keeping current in the "Art World." He has an in-born talent, fine tuned by practice, discipline and dedication. His reward for all his hard work is the ability to paint and sell his watercolors full-time.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

  • Born January 1, 1953
  • Family life plays an important role in Andy's life. Andy and his wife, Linda, have been married since 1979 and have a daughter living in DC. Andy is a track coach for Warwick's Middle School. He is an avid bicycle rider and can often be seen repairing the neighborhood bikes.

GOALS and ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

  • Andy has been painting professionally since 1980.
  • Over the years there have been many awards and special recognition. While that has been important and helped build an impressive resumé, he has placed more emphasis on his personal connection with his clients.

THE PAINTINGS and PRINTS

  • Andy has specialized in watercolors. He uses transparent watercolors, painted in a series of washes to build color, creating shadows and a very strong use of light.
  • Not a private person, Andy enjoys having people watching him paint.
  • Self-published, Andy has invested in reproductions of his paintings. He has carefully chosen a printer that offers quality and color closest to his original. He continues to use four color offset printing.
